When Hardscaping Adds More Value Than More Plantings

Learn when patios, walkways, and retaining features deliver a better return than adding more plants to the landscape.

More planting is not always the answer. On many properties, the biggest improvement comes from adding structure first.

Walkways, patios, retaining walls, and transitions between spaces make the landscape feel intentional. They also reduce the amount of plant material that has to be constantly maintained just to make the yard feel finished.

Hardscaping is especially valuable when a property needs better traffic flow, stronger outdoor living areas, or more durable visual structure.

Once those foundations are in place, plantings tend to work better because they support a clearer design instead of carrying all of the visual weight alone.
